OUR STORY

1st Generation Family Farm

Our farm, founded on a lifetime love of the land and shaped by 25 years of service in the United States Navy, is the culmination of a long-held goal. Growing up on farms in Shelby County, Jessy discovered delight and purpose in seeing life unfold—from the first sprout pushing through the dirt to the harvest that feeds families. Growing food has a tremendous spiritual dimension—it ties us to nature, community, and God's plan.

He then entered the Navy to grow and serve something greater than himself. In 2007, while stationed onboard the USS Ohio in Washington State, he met his spouse and life partner, who fell in love with him and shared his ambition of farming and developing a community in Kentucky. Throughout our Navy service, we toured the world and made a point of visiting farm stands, U-pick orchards, and local markets wherever we lived or served. These experiences generated a desire to one day start our own farm—one that could give back, establish community ties, and provide our three children with the same connection to the land that we had.
When it came time to establish roots, Kentucky seemed appropriate. Its beauty, rich agricultural heritage, and community-minded people made it an ideal spot to raise a family and build a future.
Our farm's name is derived from the Navy tradition of E-7 (Chiefs) through E-9 (Master Chief) as "goats," which dates to the days of wooden ships, when live animals could be brought onboard for meat and milk. When the Chief Petty Officer rank was established in 1893, the goats were kept in pens at the Chief's berthing and mess area. Over time, the term "Goat Locker" became a nickname for the Chiefs' living quarters, which is still used today. They handled being on ships better than other livestock and occupied less space. In the nineteenth century, they evolved from food sources to mascots. The first one, named El Cid, appeared at the Army-Navy football game in 1893.

Like the goats of old, we respect resilience, resourcefulness, and companionship. At Old Goat Farm, we are creating more than just a location to raise fruits and vegetables; we are also creating a legacy. Our mission is to provide fresh, nutritious produce, foster community, and serve as a support system for those around us. Whether you're picking your own berries, subscribing to our CSA, or celebrating life’s special moments here, you’re part of our story.
